About

The Peg Loomer is the creative practice of Sophie Heywood, who works exclusively with British wool to create handwoven and felted textiles, from rugs and jewellery to fibre art, weaving kits and naturally coloured yarns. After discovering how undervalued British wool had become, Sophie began finding new ways to make use of the fleeces available to her. Working with Halifax Spinning Mill and knitwear designer Jacinta Bowie, she launched her first fully traceable yarn made from Manx Loaghtan wool. Today she works with a range of rare breed wools sourced directly from farms across Yorkshire, including Temple Newsam Estate, producing naturally coloured Aran-weight yarns complete with full traceability information. Alongside making and selling yarn, Sophie teaches peg loom weaving and needle felting workshops, encouraging more people to discover the versatility and value of British wool. She also creates weaving and felting kits, offers bespoke commissions for farmers using their own fleeces, and exhibits regularly at events including Yarndale and the Cumbrian Wool Gathering. Sophie is committed to paying farmers well above the standard wool price, helping to support rare breed flocks while creating beautiful, fully traceable products that celebrate British fibre.
