SUPPORTING

Small-Scale British Wool Supply Networks

We bring together farmers, processors, makers and tesxtile brands who want to work closely with fibre and understand where it comes from. By encouraging traceability and strong relationships across the supply chain, we help ensure British wool continues to be valued and used.

Supporting Small-Scale British Wool Supply Networks

We bring together farmers, processors, makers and textile brands who want to work closely with fibre and understand where it comes from. By encouraging traceability and strong relationships across the supply chain, we help ensure British wool continues to be valued and used.

Supporting Small-Scale Wool Supply

Farmers Yarn focuses on smaller-scale wool supply chains where close relationships between farmers, mills and makers are possible. By helping these networks develop, we support the long-term strength of the British wool industry and create opportunities for wool to be used in thoughtful and innovative ways.

Encouraging Traceability

Members of Farmers Yarn work transparently with wool that can be traced back to named UK farms. This helps customers understand where their fibre comes from and strengthens confidence in British wool.

Connecting People Across The Supply Chain

Farmers Yarn helps build relationships between the people who work with wool - from farmers and mills to designers and textile brands. By bringing these connections closer together, we support a more resilient and collaborative wool industry.

A Community Of Practice

Farmers Yarn is not a certification scheme. It is a community of farmers, producers and makers who share a commitment to working carefully with fibre and supporting the future of British wool.

Learn About Farming

What is Farmer’s Yarn?

Farmer’s Yarn is a network for small-scale British wool producers – farmers producing under 500kg of wool a year – and the makers, retailers, and customers who want to buy directly from them.

We exist because British wool is undervalued, and the farmers who produce it deserve better. Our role is to shorten the distance between fleece and finished product, and to ensure more of the value stays at the farm gate.

Farmer’s Yarn wool and natural fibres come directly from British farms.

We focus on producers who know their animals, their land, and their wool and fibre – not on volume.

The Farmer’s Yarn Promise is the set of principles every member of the network commits to.

Rather than using formal certification schemes – which often add cost and paperwork without returning value to farmers – we ask members to uphold shared standards around animal welfare, land stewardship, fair pricing, and honest storytelling.

It’s built on relationships, not labels.

Most certification schemes weren’t designed for small-scale wool producers. The auditing costs alone can make them unviable at this scale.

The Farmer’s Yarn Promise achieves the same goal – accountability and trust – through direct relationships, transparency, and shared responsibility across the network.

We prefer to be precise rather than overuse the word “sustainable.”

What we can say is this:

  • shorter supply chains mean less transport
  • buying direct ensures more money reaches the farmer
  • supporting small flocks helps maintain diverse, working landscapes

It’s not a perfect system, but it is a more transparent and grounded one.

British wool is durable, breathable, and suited to the climate it comes from.

More importantly, buying British wool directly supports the farmers and landscapes that produce it. It is one of the most traceable natural fibres available – if you know where to look.

Farmer’s Yarn is for:

  • makers – knitters, weavers, and spinners – who want to know exactly where their yarn comes from
  • farmers and producers looking to add value to their wool and build direct relationships
  • brands and retailers who want to source British wool honestly and communicate its provenance

The Farmer’s Yarn membership network is currently in soft launch, growing through direct invitation as we build it carefully.

Members share a commitment to the Farmer’s Yarn Promise and gain access to a community of producers, makers, and retailers working toward a more transparent and functional British wool supply chain.

If you would like to become a member, we would love to hear from you.

Farmer’s Yarn products are identified through swing tags and point-of-sale materials carrying the Farmer’s Yarn name.

These link back to the farm where the wool was produced. The tag is a starting point – the story behind it is the point.

Farmer’s Yarn supports farmers by:

  • helping them sell wool at a price that reflects quality, not just weight
  • connecting them directly with makers and buyers who value provenance
  • increasing the visibility – and value – of small-scale British wool production

British Wool operates at a national scale, handling wool marketing for larger producers.

Farmer’s Yarn focuses specifically on small-scale farmers producing under 500kg of wool per year.

Farmer’s Yarn is available through a growing network of makers, retailers, and events.

As the network expands, so will availability. If you are a maker or retailer interested in stocking Farmer’s Yarn, or a producer interested in joining, we encourage you to get in touch.
