About

London Wool began in 2024 when I was searching for a sustainable British wool for my business, Ossian Knitwear. Based in London, I did not think there would be many opportunities to create an affordable local yarn until I discovered that most of the London city farms kept sheep, many of them rare and heritage breeds. After visiting many of these farms, I discovered that much of the fleece was being thrown away, so I set about collecting as much as possible. The wool was graded at the Ashford Grading Depot, with fleece suitable for spinning separated from the coarser wool, which was directed into insulation products so that none of it went to waste. The wool was then scoured at Haworth and spun by Lightowler to create a 2/8s woollen spun yarn. This is sold wholesale to knitting shops, directly through my website, and made into products such as hats, socks, sweaters and blankets. The city farms receive some wool free to sell and raise money for their charities, and can then purchase the wool and other products at a preferential wholesale price.
