Nicci James is knit specialist and researcher championing the amazing diversity of native British wool breeds. Nicci’s practise is inspired by marrying tradition, innovation and tactility, developing into an innovative design system during her MA at the Royal College of Art. Under the studio name UNUSUWUL, Nicci works with farmers, designers, research centres and the UK wool network in-between to develop pieces which celebrate the properties of the fibres they are made from, retaining qualities and behaviours that can be traced directly back to the fleece. Each piece brings an opportunity to learn about the landscape wool comes from, the skilled hands that transform fibre to yarn and how design brings all these elements together through making.
