We are sheep farmers Ian and Amy Reid, running a flock of 500 breeding ewes near the villages of Madderty and Methven in Perthshire, Scotland. Our commercial flock includes Scotch Mules, Cheviots and Texel Crosses. We also run a pedigree flock of Beltex sheep (with the prefix Osprey), alongside breeding flocks of Shetlands and Merinos. We are Scotch Farm Assured with Quality Meat Scotland and sell our lamb and hoggs through local markets. We value the diversity of wool grown by our flock, from mountain Scottish Blackface to lowland lustre Bluefaced Leicester and fine low-micron Merino. We also believe in the full cycle of wool within a soil-to-soil framework. All dyes used for our yarns are sourced from nature, with many grown in our own dye garden, including woad, chamomile and coreopsis, or gathered locally from plants such as nettle, dock and bracken. The ‘waste’ wool from our clip, including bellies, skirts and matted fleeces, is processed into a natural fertiliser. We also run Rooted Textiles, an annual natural textiles festival held on the first Sunday in October as part of Sustainable Fashion Week and Campaign for Wool’s October Wool Month.
